AP CAPSTONE

AP Capstone is the modern equivalent of the long-revered International Baccalaureate (IB) program.  Established by the College Board in 2014, the AP Capstone Program is quickly becoming a prominent fixture in High schools across the nation and the world.

As a tutor, a recent college graduate, and a student who received a 5 out of 5 on their AP Research project (which included a scientific study), I am uniquely qualified to help guide high school students through the AP Capstone process.

What is the AP Capstone Program?
The AP Capstone program was designed to prepare students for success by teaching them important fundamentals they will need in college including teamwork, communication, critical thinking, research, and writing skills.  To be awarded a Capstone degree students need to complete:
  • AP Seminar class (generally completed junior year)
  • AP Research class (generally completed senior year)
  • Any 4 AP Courses of their choice (completed anytime in high school)​

What is the AP Seminar Class?
The AP Seminar class is the first class in the capstone series. It is designed to prepare students for both AP Research and college by teaching fundamental analytical skills needed for success. Your teacher will give lectures and assignments designed to help you learn about the basics of a research paper.  Paying attention, asking questions, completing assignments, and following instructions will help you be successful in the class.

During the first half of the course your teacher will lead you through two main projects: one independent and one collaborative. Each project will have several components: research, a written paper, and an oral presentation.

During the second half of the course you will repeat the same type of projects as the first half, but this time you will receive a score that will count towards your AP Seminar exam. 
​
What is the AP Research Class?

AP research is a senior year course where students are expected to write a college level research paper, then give a presentation and answer questions concerning their research topic.

My AP Capstone Services

AP Research holds a special place in my heart as one of the most challenging, yet enjoyable classes in high school. I know the exact process that needs to take place, the amount of work that needs to be done, and exactly what college board wants to see from a student's perspective. I was the only student in my high school graduating class that received a 5 out of 5 on in AP Research as well as conduct an actual experiment so I have a through understanding of what the program entails.

As a recent AP Capstone graduate and long-time tutor, I truly understand the rigors and challenges of AP Capstone.  The process of brainstorming, researching, writing, and revising is daunting to many high school students, but it doesn't have to be.
​
Please be advised that due to the ethical requirements of the Capstone program; I can only "guide" your student.  I can not develop, originate or edit a student's work, but I am able to assist them through the mechanics of the research process and help them understand how to successfully fulfill AP Capstone requirements. My general services for AP Capstone mentorship are as follows:

  • Explaining the steps of the brainstorming process in order to ensure students choose a unique, personalized topic they will enjoy, but I cannot suggest or supply potential topics.
  • Discuss background research techniques, how to find reliable sources, how to read sources, and tricks to make citing sources later easier
  • Inform students on the routes for research they can take and the usual way studies are conducted (Survey, experimental, etc)
  • Making sure they understand the proper way to structure their research paper.
  • Discussing how to make a professional looking slide show for their oral presentation
  • Working on general public speaking and presentation skills
